Pathophysiology of Alzheimers Disease - Free Essay Example

Alzheimers disease is a slow, chronic, and insidious disease that works its way into its manifestations for years. It is the most common form of dementia, which is a term used for severe memory loss that will interfere with daily living (What is Alzheimers?). Alzheimers is much more than forgetting to turn off the stove after cooking, but may begin this way. This disease begins its progression by causing little things to slip the mind of the person suffering from the disease, and can lead to forgetting to bring in the groceries, getting lost on the way home, or even forgetting a loved one. This disease is not only hard for the patient, but can take a toll on the patients family and can lead to very difficult and emotional times for the family. It is extremely important to understand signs and symptoms of Alzheimers disease and to understand the pathophysiology behind the disease to better prepare and notice the onset of the disease in patients and loved ones alike. Pathophysiology The pathophysiology of Alzheimers is important to know so that early signs may be noticed and understood, and so that it may be treated correctly, not only medically, but therapeutically. It is known that as the body ages, the structures in the body and the functions that once worked properly may slow down or stop working as time goes on. One of the functions that begin to deteriorate with age is the blood brain barrier, which acts as a semipermeable membrane in the brain to regulate what enters and what exits the brain. It is important to regulate what comes into the brain, but issues occur more often when this barrier does not allow wastes to exit the brain. The body has ways of allowing wastes to get removed from the brain, but this will begin to deteriorate with age just as other functions deteriorate with time. The wastes staying in the brain begin to play a vital role in the onset of Alzheimers (Nizari, Romero, Hawkes, 2017). Etiology and Risk Factors There are many risk factors that may lead to Alzheimers disease, and unfortunately there are very few modifiable risk factors which makes this disease very difficult to avoid. One of the main risk factors of Alzheimers is age. Most people with Alzheimers are found to be above age 65. Patients who are under age 65 and develop Alzheimers are diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimers. It is unknown why some people develop Alzheimers earlier than others, but it is rare (Graff-Radford, 2017). It has been found in a population based study that females are more likely to develop Alzheimers (Cheng, Tsao, Su, Sung, Tai, Kung, 2018). The same study also found that there are some modifiable factors that may lead to Alzheimers, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, which may be prevented through a healthy diet and regular exercise (Cheng, Tsao, Su, Sung, Tai, Kung, 2018). History of Alzheimers disease in the family also makes a great impact on development of this particula r form of dementia (Cheng, Tsao, Su, Sung, Tai, Kung, 2018). Manifestations. The beginning signs and symptoms of Alzheimers disease begin with forgetting small things, such as forgetting to turn off the lights in the house before leaving. These beginning symptoms can also involve misplacing items, such as putting the car keys in the refrigerator. In the beginning it is easy to laugh it off and move on, but as the disease progresses it becomes apparent that something more severe than an occasional slip up is occurring. In early stages, patients with Alzheimers will begin developing short term memory loss, such as forgetting something that was just said moments ago (What is Alzheimers?). Memory issues are not the only signs of developing Alzheimers. There are also manifestations of dysphagia, dysphasia, and trouble with walking or balance (What is Alzheimers?). It is important to remember that the person developing these symptoms may not be aware, and may deny any symptoms. Oftentimes the family will see the symptoms before the patient does, and should search for help to keep this loved one from developing more issues in a shorter amount of time (What is Alzheimers?). Complications. Complications of this disease do not only involve health related issues, but include complications from the patient being put in danger due to the lack of memory and cognitive function. Patients with Alzheimers may forget to turn off the stove at night after cooking, which can put the patient at risk of starting a fire, which also puts others at risk. These patients may also forget to eat or drink, which brings up risk of dehydration and malnutrition. Development of malnutrition is common with Alzheimers patients, and patients with other forms of dementia, and can lead to a quicker progression of the disease (Sun, Wen, Zhou, Ding, 2017). Diagnostics. There are multiple ways for a doctor to determine whether or not the patient is suffering from Alzheimers disease. After obtaining a thorough history of the patient and the family history, the doctor will then undergo a series of functional tests. The tests are to test neurological function and include testing reflexes, coordination, eye movement, speech, and sensation (Medical Tests). The doctor may also perform mental status testing which include tests such as a Mini-Mental State Exam or an MMSE, or a Mini-Cog test (Medical Tests). The MMSE test is a scoring system that is rated from 0-30, and is based off of a number of questions that the doctor may ask to determine cognitive function and memory. The lower the score, the more severe the case of Alzheimers is (Medical Tests). The Mini-Cog test is another way of looking at cognitive function and memory by remembering a list of objects and repeating them in a short amount of time, or drawing a clock with the numbers 1-12 in the appropriate area, and putting arrows to show the time that the doctor has stated (Medical Tests). Finally, the doctor may order brain imaging tests such as a Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or an MRI. The doctor may also choose to do a computed tomography, more commonly known as a CT scan. These tests help to rule out other possible issues that may be leading to loss of cognitive function, such as a stroke or a tumor that may be affecting the brain (Medical Tests). Conclusion Alzheimers disease can be an extremely difficult one to see a loved one develop, and can be frustrating to develop as well. It is important to know the history of family members to understand possible risk factors, and allowing preparation and prevention over time. It is also important to take care of the body through regular exercise and healthy diet, as this can affect the brain drastically, and lead to modifiable risk factors that may lead to Alzheimers. Looking for signs at an early stage may help slow the process of brain deterioration through this form of dementia, but there is still no cure at this time. Remember to be patient with loved ones and patients who may be dealing with the progression of this disease, and understand that this is very difficult on both sides. Therapeutic communication through this process can be one of the best treatments for all people affected by this.

As per this, major objectives of the report are: To analyse the use of social media in business To analyse various tools of social media used in business To study various benefits and disadvantages of using social media for Telstra. Scope of project The present project has addressed the latest topic for research purpose which is related to use of social media. Through the report, attempt has been made to develop the ideas related to various benefits and disadvantages that can be devastating for any business firm (Curtis, and et.al., 2010). Apart from this, the study done in present report will aid in developing the secondary research data for further studies. Thus, the scope of present project will extend from a general view to its application in a practical business world to enhance the understanding about the topic. Literature review Social media is a tool that is being used widely at present time in every type of business organisations. The stated method helps in developing a promotional method in an advanced way that can cover a large number of customers at a time (Correa, Hinsley and De Zuniga, 2010). Besides this, it is an effective tool that can aid in making contact with customers to bring improvements within business. However, it is evident that misuse if such effective tool can also prove to be a big disadvantage for the business. The literature review section will make a deeper analysis of the current situation concerned with social media and its use. Social media and its use in business With the advancement in technology within recent years, the usage of internet among people has increased to a great extent. According to DeAndrea and et.al., (2012) a large part of population spends their time on internet to browse different social networking sites, Youtube, online shopping etc. Therefore every small to big business organisations have started promoting their products and services through social media. The use of social media for promotion is aimed at connecting with customers in a more personalised way so that they can be informed about new products and services in market. Besides this, it is an effective medium to monitor various customers choices and demands so that target customers can be focussed upon. The telecom industry evidence a cut throat competition. Therefore to remain within competition, the stated industry seeks aid of social media (Gerbaudo, 2012). This makes communication between intended consumers and business firm easier. However, it is also evident that the use of social media has its own pros as well as cons that must be considered before implementing the social media tools. Social media tools The tools of social media are present in a large quantity which can be used by the business enterprises for promotion of their products and services. These tools are prominently useful for maintaining the business communication with the customers. Some of the major tools of social media that are used by various entities are as follows: Social networking sites: Moran, Seaman and Tinti-Kane, (2011) says that there are diverse social networkings sites on which a large number of people are active. The business firms are also using sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as a powerful tool for promoting business and its products and services. These sites are very helpful in maintaining contacts with large number of customers to attract them for purchasing products. Social extranets: The social extranet provides an opportunity for establishing a private network through internet so as to share significant business information with intended parties like consumers, suppliers, retailers etc. (Keim and Noji, 2010). Employee networks: The employee networks are the medium which are established for maintaining internal communication. Besides this the stated medium is an effective way to contact service professionals by customers. Advantages of social media The major advantage of social media can be seen within Telstra network as a powerful tool for connecting with the customers of external world. The customers can be influenced deeply through these mediums for stimulating their urges for purchases of products and services. The foremost advantages of social media for stated business can be looked upon within below points: Connecting world: According to Shirky (2011), social networking sites and internet presents a medium, which provides a large platform for connecting with the entire world. The respective medium not only gives an opportunity to Telstra for connecting with customers at local level but also at global level without visiting them physically. Thus, it proves to be a cheaper method of spreading wide networks. Easy segmentation of the customers: The social media helps to connect through internet with large number of people. As per Xiang and Gretzel, (2010), the medium can be very helpful in identifying the customers with similar types of likes and interests. Besides this, it helps mentioned company in promotion of innovative ideas and inventions among customers on the basis of their expectations. Thus, it makes easier to categorise the consumers on the basis of their common interests and preferences. Quick information sharing: The social media sites include the facility of chats and messaging through which any type of message can be shared among various persons instantly (Dabbagh and Kitsantas, 2012). For stated venture, the exchange of ideas and information can be made in very less time among a large group of persons. The business people can also utilise this facility to make an interaction with customers to provide them information about their products and service. Disadvantages Time intensive: In the views of Treem and Leonardi, (2013) the social networking is a time intensive way as it aims to establish a long term relationship with customers. Thus, it is essential to appoint a person who closely and regularly monitors the activities on social media about customers responses and comments. Mentioned organisation is also facing this issue as it has a large customer base with it. Risk of fraud: Courtney (2013) states that with various types of advancements, there is an increased possibility of theft and frauds that can be harmful for significant business information and data which can be entered through unauthorised access. The said entity must maintain a high level of security system that can help in saving from such theft and fraud. Research questions The major objective of present research has been set to analyse the use of social media in present time. With this objective, the selected company for this purpose is Telstra on which the entire research has been done (Fisher and Clayton, 2012). As per the previous objectives set in the above section, several research questions have been framed which are mentioned below: Is social networking always advantageous for various business purposes? H0: The social media is not always beneficial for various business purposes. H1: The social media is always beneficial for various business purposes. Secondary questions What are the uses of social media in business? Which are the various tools of social networking mediums used in business? What are the advantages and disadvantages of social media in business? Research design and methodology The research design is a plan that provides a particular structure which can be followed to move towards a particular direction for research purpose. The design of research also mentions a specific methodology according to which the research will be carried out (Whiting and Williams, 2013). The present research has been accomplished as per the following structure and design: Research design: The current research has embraced the qualitative method of research which follows an observation method for making a deep study on chosen matter of social media use in Telstra Company. The basic design of research follows the descriptive study so as to describe the major points about the research and various findings related to it. Sampling: The sampling is a process in which researcher makes an attempt to limit the size of large population into smaller one so that a proper study can be carried out (Kavanaugh and et.al., 2012). A proper sampling provides a right structure to entire research by making the study precise and more result oriented. The present research has been undertaken by taking a sample size of 5 managers of Telstra organisation who can provide information related to effectiveness of social media for their business. Designing: The current research has been designed and structured as per the qualitative method in which secondary method of data collection has been adopted. The analysis part of the research has been designed as per thematic assessment to generate the desired results. Data collection method: The present research is based on collecting data through secondary data collection (Brennan and Croft, 2012). The sources referred for this purpose are newspapers, magazines, internet articles and various business reports of the mentioned firm. These sources have proved to be of special significance for collecting concerned information. Reliability and validity: The reliability is a basic characteristic of a good research which refers to the consistency in the findings which can generate similar results each time if similar instruments are applied. While, the Validity is a factor in the research, which maintains the authenticity of the findings presented in the report. By maintaining these two constituents throughout the report will aid in improving the quality and value of research. Research Limitations The limitations of a research can be understood as the constraints that may act as a limit to the scope of study (Boyd, 2014). There are always some limitations in a report that can restrain the scope of study. The current research has also some limitations like limited time period. The study with wide scale of research scope cannot be completed as per the allotted time period. Besides this, approaching managers of Telstra to collect relevant information and gaining their permission to conduct a research on their company was a complex task. As per this, the information collected for study and research purpose was available in limited quantity. These limitations have affected the results of present study in negative manner (DeAndrea and et.al., 2012). Time schedule Task Name Duration Start Finish Predecessors Business research methodology 13 wks Tue 8/29/17 Mon 11/27/17 Analysis of social media in market 1 wk Tue 8/29/17 Mon 9/4/17 Identifying gaps in the study 1 wk Tue 9/5/17 Mon 9/11/17 2 Setting aims and objectives 1 wk Tue 9/12/17 Mon 9/18/17 3 Literature review 2 wks Tue 9/19/17 Mon 10/2/17 4 Selecting data collecting method 1 wk Tue 10/3/17 Mon 10/9/17 5 Sampling 1 wk Tue 10/3/17 Mon 10/9/17 5 Collecting secondary data 2 wks Tue 10/10/17 Mon 10/23/17 6,7 Analysis of secondary data 1 wk Tue 10/24/17 Mon 10/30/17 8 Searching for alternative solutions 1 wk Tue 10/31/17 Mon 11/6/17 9 Draft submitting 1 wk Tue 11/7/17 Mon 11/13/17 10 Making corrections as per feedback 1 wk Tue 11/14/17 Mon 11/20/17 11 Final submission 1 wk Tue 11/21/17 Mon 11/27/17 12 Conclusion The above research has been conducted with an aim of looking into social media network for business purpose. This research concludes that Telstra Company is also using this medium for business purpose which is proving to be of valuable service. While, the report also articulates that there can be some disadvantages of social networking as well which must be addressed to reap appropriate benefits. Lady Day The Many Faces Of Billie Holiday Essays - Billie Holiday

Lady Day: The Many Faces Of Billie Holiday Lady Day: The Many Faces Of Billie Holiday The movie Lady Day: The Many Faces Of Billie Holiday paints an interesting, and thought provoking portrait of one of jazz and blues most charismatic, and influential artists. The incomparable talent of Billie Holiday, both truth and legend are immortalized in this one-hour documentary film. The film follows Holiday, also referred to as ?Lady Day? or ?Lady?, through the many triumphs and trials of her career, and does it's very best to separate the facts from fiction. Her autobiography Lady Sings The Blues is used as a rough guide of how she desired her life story to be viewed by her public. Those who knew her, worked with her, and loved her paint a different picture than this popular, and mostly fictional autobiography. Interview footage of her colleagues, fellow musicians, and friends such as Annie Ross, Buck Clayton, Mal Waldron, and Harry ?Sweets? Edison look back on their years of friendship and experiences with the woman they affectionately call ?Lady?. Their anecdotes, fond memories, and descriptive way of describing Holiday's unique talent and style, show the Lady that they knew and loved. The film also makes interesting use of photographs and orignal recordings of Holiday, along with movie footage of different eras. With the use of these devices, we get a feel for what Holiday's music meant for the audience it reached. The black and white footage from the thirties of groups of people merrily swing dancing, paired with a bumptious, and swingin' number Billie Holiday performed with Count Basie called ?Swing Me Count?, makes one wonder what it might have been like to actually be there. To wildly swing dance to the live vocals of Billie Holiday must have been an amazing experience, as this film demonstrates. The most enduring and alluring part of the film is the live footage of Holiday performing, either in a band with one of her idols, Louis Armstrong, or in her first film role as a maid, or in her later televised performances in the fifties. It was not Lady's vocal talent that made her what she was. It was her delivery, performance style, charisma, and impeccably beautiful dramatization of even the most banal little number that made an impression on audiences. The footage of her singing the song ?Strange Fruit? is one of the most amazing and alarming things in the film. As the audience looking in, we feel every word she sings, with a bit of awe, tinged with the horrid reality of what the song is about. This particular song was not recorded for many years due to the subject matter; lynching of African Americans in the South. This film shows Holiday as a enduring symbol of her art, a student of a life that was seldom kind or easy, a talented and alluring performer beloved by her audience, and a master of musical interpretation. I found the film to be highly enjoyable, and absolutely fascinating. I have always been a fan of Billie Holiday since I could remember, but it this particular film piqued my interest, and showed a true legend in both her prime, and the moments of her demise. It is done well enough to do justice to her work, as well as to her legend. I would definitely recommend it. Music Essays

18 ACT Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Score

18 ACT Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Score SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Looking for some quick fixes to improve your ACT scores? Look no further. In this article, we give you severaltips and tricks for the ACT so that you can get your best possible scores on every section. First, I'll go through specific tips for each of the five sections (English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing). Then, I'll provide you with overall tips you can use throughout the test.Note that these are all last-minute test-taking advice tidbits rather than in-depth study hacks. Therefore,it's best to view them as light icing on top of a delicious cake representing the ACT expertise you've developed over a longer period of time. ACT English Tips The first section you'll take on the ACT is the English section, which focuses on your knowledge of grammar as well as your editing skills. #1: Choose the Most Concise Answer ACT English questions look for answers that result in the most straightforward, logical sentence structure, so try to find the choice that provides all of the necessary information for the sentence to make grammatical sense- and nothing extra. The best writing says what it needs to say clearly and concisely! #2: Read the Paragraph First A good plan of attack for ACT English is to read the whole paragraph that has the sentence you must revise before you look at the answer choices. This will give you context for your choices and a better grasp on the structure of the sentence and how you might need to change it.With this strategy, you can reduce the number of errors you make caused by careless misreadings. #3: Be Careful With "No Change" Answers On ACT English questions that ask you to choose the answer that makes a sentence grammatically correct, you'll have the option to pick "No Change." This is a dangerous choice because if you aren’t aware of more obscure grammar rules, you might be tempted to choose it on some questions for which the sentence actually can be improved. Thus, it’s really important to double-check all other answers before settling on "No Change" as the correct choice. That said, keep in mind that "No Change" really is the correct answer around25-30% of the time it's an option, so don't second-guess yourself if you're relatively certain there isn't an error. Read the sentence through with each of the possible suggested changes before you bubble in â€Å"No Change† to ensure that you’re ultimately making the right call. ACT Math Tips Up next is the ACT Math section. Here, we give you two key tips you'll need to know in order to get a high Math score on test day. #4: Pay Attention to Diagrams The ACT Math section will often provide you with diagrams of figures that describe the problem you’re trying to answer. It’s important to pay attention to these figures, asthey will give you clues about which answer choices are the most logical. If a problem asks you to figure out an angle, for example, and some of the choices are acute while others are obtuse, you’ll be able to eliminate at least a couple of these answers just by looking at the diagram. If it doesn’t seem like an answer is possible based on the visual aid alone, it’s usually safe to cross it out. #5: Plug In Answers and Numbers Two of the most important strategies to help you confirm you've got the correct answer on a math problem are to plug in answersand plug in numbers. Here's how to plug in answers: if a question asks you to solve for x,simplyplug each answer choice back into the original equation and see which one works. This will tell you which answer choice is the correct one. You don’t even need to really solve the problem! Plugging in numbers is a little different. With this strategy, you'll choose random numbers to plug into algebraic variables. This strategy lets you analyze the problem using real numbers instead of unknowns, and works best for questions with multiple variables. While helpful, these strategies can sometimes be more time consuming than just solving the equation directly, so only use them as a last resort if you're stumped. All you gotta do is find the right answer cord. ACT Reading Tips With ACT Reading- the third section on the test- you'll need to know how to read and interpret passages both quickly and accurately. #6: Start With Your Strengths The ACT Reading section is always structured the same way with four topic areas in the same order. Each topic corresponds to a passage or pair of passages. These topics are as follows: Prose fiction/literary narrative Social science Humanities Natural science To make sure you’re getting the most out of this section, start by reading the passage(s) that correspond to the topic area in which you are most comfortable. This might simply mean starting with subject matter that is most interesting to you and will thus make for a quicker read. This way, you can get the questions that are easiest for you out of the way first and won’t risk running out of time before you have a chance to answer others. #7: Skim Passages There’s a lot of time pressure on the ACT Reading section, so try to read the passages as efficiently as possible. For some students, it might be manageable to read passages normally and still have enough time to finish the section, but you have to be a really quick and thorough reader in order to pull this off. The best strategy for most people is to skim the passages instead. In order to skim effectively, read the introduction and conclusion paragraphs as well as the first and last sentences of every body paragraph. This will give you a good overview of the main ideas and allow you to answer most main point questions. When you get to questions about details, you can then reread specific parts of the passage if necessary. ACT Science Tips For the Science section, you'll need to know how to interpret data and must answer questions dealing with graphs, tables, and scientific experiments. Here are our two best tips. #8: Do the Conflicting Viewpoints Section Last Theconflicting viewpoints section on ACT Science is usually the most time consuming for students. In case you’re not familiar with it, this part of the section asks you to read two or three passages that detail different viewpoints on a scientific issue. You'll then answer questions about these viewpoints and how they relate to one another. Since this is more reading-intensive and can eat up a lot of time, it’s best to save this part for last so that you don’t end up missing other questions later on in the section that will be quicker and easier for you to answer. #9: Rely On Visuals The ACT Science section hits you with a lot of complicated terminology and unfamiliar facts that make it seem overwhelming. The best policy when faced with all of this information is to ignore it and go straight for the graphs, which should provide enough information for you to answer the majority of the questions you’re faced with. Most of the information you’re given is just extra stuff thrown in there to make this section seem more difficult than it really is. In reality,ACT Science is more about logical reasoning and data interpretation than it is about actually knowing any science. As long as you can read the graphs, you'll be fine! If you can't read this graph, drink more coffee. ACT Essay Tips The ACT Writing section, or Essay, is an optional section and the last one you'll take (if you signed up to take it). Below, we give you two expert tips to help you get the Essay score you deserve. #10: Pres Since ACT Essay prompts are relatively predictable, you can do some of your own essay planning before the test to save yourself time and stress.Choose concrete examples from art, history, literature, and/or personal experience; try not to use hypothetical or vague examples to support your points. Keep in mind that all of the facts you use in your essay don’t necessarily have to be true. Graders don’t have time to fact-check, so they'll take everything you write at face value. This means you can make up statistics or historical facts to support your thesis, and you won't be penalized! #: Write a Great Intro and Conclusion It’s likely that the essay graders will read your introduction and conclusion more closely than they will the rest of your essay. If they can find your thesis easily, you're already on the right track to earning a great Essay score. As long as you have body paragraphs that make sense and support the points outlined in your thesis, graders will likely give you at least a 4 in the Organization and Ideas and Analysis domains. You'll also need to write a conclusion paragraph thatrestates your thesis andshows a strong understanding of how all your points relate to one another. If you can demonstrate basic knowledge of how to logically structure an essay and stay on topic, you'll be good to go. Overall ACT Tips Now, let's wrap up with some general ACT tips to help you feel more confident for test day. #12: Skip Hard Questions On the ACT, time pressure is a very real problem for many students. To avoid losing points, you need to learn to skip questions that are giving you trouble before they eat up too much of your time.â€Å"Too much of your time† means something different for each section: English: more than 30 seconds per question Math: more than 60 seconds per question Reading: more than 45 seconds per question Science: more than 45 seconds per question As a rule of thumb, if you feel like you’re not any closer to figuring out a question after about 30 seconds, move on.Circle that question so that it’s easier to spot later on when you want to go back to it. Then, make a quick pass through the whole section and answer all of the easy questions first so you don’t miss points by running out of time before you're able to get through everything. #13: Use the Process of Elimination For every section of the ACT, use the process of elimination as your main strategy for attacking tough or confusing questions. This ties into the fundamental rule of ACT reading, which says that for every question there is only one completely correct answer- the rest can be eliminated based on evidence in the passage. The process of elimination is more foolproof than trying to pick out the correct answer from the pack. Look for reasons to get rid of choices rather than reasons why they might work. This will help you be more picky about which answer you bubble in, and will also prevent you from thinking that more than one answer might be correct. If there’s even one tiny thing out of place in an answer choice, get rid of it! #14: Bubble at the End You can save time on the ACT bywaiting until the end of a section to bubble in your answers. This cuts down on your time per question by letting you avoid the process of going back and forth between your test booklet and answer sheet. It’s more efficient to circle the answers you choose in your test booklet and then fill them in all at once later. Before using this tip, though, make sure you can reliably finish the section with at least three to five minutes to spare!Don't risk running into a situation in which you don’t have enough time to bubble in your answers even though you’ve gone through all of the questions. Just as you are legally obligated to pop all of the bubbles in a sheet of bubble wrap, so too must you fill in all bubbles on the ACT. #15: Answer Every Question Since there isno penalty for guessingon the ACT, make sure youfill ineverybubble! An incorrect answer and an unanswered question both have the same impact on your raw score, so even if you have no idea how to answer something, it's best to go ahead and guess anyway. #16: Get a Good Night's Sleep the Day Before the Test It might sound cheesy, but you'll feel a lot more prepared (and awake) on test day if you get a solid amount of shuteye the night before the test. How many hours you need to feel well rested varies depending on the person, but generally it's good to aim for at least eight hours of sleep. Heading into test day feeling sleepy and exhausted can dramatically affect your ability to focus and potentially lower your score. So get to bed early! #17: Eat a Hearty Breakfast In addition to the tip above, it's equally important to eat a healthy, satisfying breakfast before you take the ACT. This way you'll feel more awake and energized before taking the test. What's more, you won't have to worry about a growling stomach later on! #18: Stay Calm The most important thing to remember during the ACT is to keep a cool head.Especially given the time pressure, students who suffer from test anxiety often freak out if they have to skip a few questions.Don’t let this happen to you! Keep moving forward and answer what you can.You might find questions that initially seemed impossible are much easier when you come back to them. The nice thing about the ACT is that once you get through a section, you’re completely done with that subject. So you won’t have to worry about it until the next time you take the test (if that time even comes!). Review: 18 Tips for Improving Your ACT Score You can quickly improve your section scores on the ACT if you remember to use these 18 tips before and during the test. Let's recap: ACT English Tips Choose the Most Concise Answer Read the Whole Paragraph First Be Careful With "No Change" Answers ACT Math Tips Pay Attention to Diagrams Plug In Answers and Numbers ACT Reading Tips Start With Your Strengths Skim Passages ACT Science Tips Do the Conflicting Viewpoints Section Last Rely On Visuals ACT Essay Tips Pres Write a Great Intro and Conclusion Overall ACT Tips Skip Hard Questions Use the Process of Elimination Bubble at the End Answer Every Question Get a Good Night's Sleep the Day Before the Test Eat a Hearty Breakfast Stay Calm Remember, these are quick fixes that aren’t substitutes for studying content and gaining a deeper understanding of your mistakes. You should read some of our other articles, like this one on how to get a 36 on the ACT, to supplement your use of these tips and tricks! Analysis of Equity and Fraud Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Analysis of Equity and Fraud - Research Paper Example All these measures have been introduced with the intention of preventing fraud and ensuring that there are no hidden transfers of equitable interests and that the contents of a deceased person’s will are clearly evidenced in writing. The purpose of the Wills Act of 1837 is, therefore, to encourage people to make out their last wishes formally, publicly and in writing to prevent any scope for misunderstanding. However, the public nature of wills is often a significant drawback in some instances. A will is a public document and can be accessed by anyone and there are instances when a testator may wish to make provision for a mistress or an illegitimate child for example, which are not to be revealed in the public eye. In such instances, a testator may resort to secret trusts or half-secret trusts, whereby he formally and outwardly designates a legatee as the beneficiary of his estate, yet enters into a private arrangement with him for dispersal of the assets of his estate to other parties. The legatee thus accepts the gift after having provided an assurance to the testator for dispersal of the gift in accordance with the testator’s wishes. Hence this gives rise to the existence of a secret trust, however, if the beneficiaries cannot prove the existence of such a trust, the legatee may take the property free of the trust, which raises the issue of fraud. However, as established in the Snowden case, it is not for the legatee to prove that he is holding the property on trust, rather the beneficiaries of the trust must prove this, on the basis of the probabilities that exist.  Ã‚

Regulation of Interest Groups by the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act Essay

Regulation of Interest Groups by the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act - Essay Example The Bipartisan Campaigns Reform Act came along with two unique features that were not covered in the earlier federal act. One requirement of the BCRA was that the amount of soft-money contributions by interest groups be limited during the campaign period. This was effected by instituting federal limits to bar spending or raising of finances that are beyond the preset values. Secondly, this new law defined â€Å"electioneering communications† that required that no corporation would be allowed to fund the advertisements that had to be done 30 days before the primary elections or 60 days before a general election (Campaign Finance Institute, 2006). In addition, the candidates had to declare their names within the advertisement and confirm to have authorized the airing of such an advertisement. The impact of the new law was to minimize the influence that interest groups had maintained in the campaign by either funding the process or contributing to advertisements. Surprisingly, the provisions of these laws have faced a lot of antagonism from numerous federal candidates that have raised concerns regarding the restriction of utilization of financial resources during the campaign period. One issue that has seen many political parties and organization move to court is the pre-BCRA constitutional provision on the ‘527 organizations’ that were not covered adequately in the regulation of soft money spending. The law required that the 527 organizations such as Media Fund and Swift Board Veterans for Truth spend at least 50% of hard money in their campaign expenses while participating in federal campaigns. In 2007, the Federal Election Commission was forced to impose fines on these organizations after they had failed to abide to the financing laws governing the election process. In addition, in 2007, the US Supreme Court overturned the BCRA condition that limited the interest groups from contributing to the financing of media adverts on t he ground that this restriction was unconstitutional. As Boatright (2006) points out, BCRA has received abundant criticism and the public demand is that this law be changed to include more realistic regulation of interest group contributions to the campaign process. From above experience, it's worthy to note that the BCRA has numerous weaknesses that warrant its revision to achieve an effective regulation of interest groups. The United States President, Barack Obama, in 2010 announced the need for US to pass a bill that would restrict financial spending in the campaign period, and particularly the contribution of the specific interest groups. His argument was that the BCRA law is subject to alteration by the Supreme Court as long as this law does not state implicitly the specific amounts that federal candidates would

Leadership and Management Paper Essay Example for Free

Leadership and Management Paper Essay Ursula M. Burns is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Xerox. She has held this position for the last five years. She started out as a summer intern in 1980, and signed on in 1981. From then until she became CEO she has led several business teams and positions within Xerox, all along growing within the company. According to Fortune, she is the 22nd most powerful woman in the world. In addition to the Xerox board, she is a board director of the American Express Corporation and Exxon Mobil Corporation. Burns also provides leadership counsel to community, educational and non-profit organizations including FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), National Academy Foundation, MIT, and the U.S. Olympic Committee, among others. She is a founding board director of Change the Equation, and President Barack Obama appointed Burns vice chair of the President’s Export Council (Xerox: Ursula Burns, CEO, 2014). Leadership and Management Holding a management title does not necessarily equate to holding leadership skills. Leadership is defined in many ways, and depending on who you ask can simply be â€Å"coordinating the work of others†. However that is taking a very limited view on leadership. Leadership is a combination of rationale, inspiration, science, and art. It is said, â€Å"Leaders are thought to do the right thing, while managers do things right† (Hughes, Ginnett, Curphy, 2009). Not all leaders are managers, look at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He is argumentatively the most important Civil Rights leader, however many would not look to him as a manager. According to Forbes, Ursula has made Xerox a profitable and viable company, this past year, Burns helped Xerox generate adjusted earnings per share of $1.09, up from $1.02 in 2012, and  post $21.4 billion in full-year revenue (Forbes, 2014). Her skills as a manager aided in building Xerox to the power-house they are today. Burns is responsible for the largest acquisition in Xerox history, and has allowed them to invest in business services, which is a $600 billion industry. Making these decisions requires hard decisions, including outsourcing, closing offices that are not performing well, and adopting a work from home culture. Because of this Burns has found herself on the 2014 Worst CEO list put together by 24/7 Wall Street and Glassdoor. Burns received a positive review from fewer that the 140,000 employees Xerox gained in the business services acquisition. Only 30% approved of her performance (Brown, 2014). Also something that does not help Burns gain leadership approval is the fact that she was paid on average $13 million dollars for 2010 – 2012, while over 500 people were laid off. While Burns has made moves in hopes of ensuring the stability of Xerox there are some that are calling for her to be fired. Burns’ recent letter to shareholders showed just how badly the transaction had go ne. Over the course of 2010 to 2013, revenue, net income and operating margins are flat to down. In particular, revenue fell 1% to $21.4 billion in 2013. In the fourth quarter, revenue dropped 3% to $5.7 billion. Net income was down 1% to $1.2 billion last year. In the fourth quarter, the drop was 4% to $311 million (McIntyre, 2014). When measuring success of a leader, there are many ways to do that and depending on which way is chosen could render different results. Using unit performance indices, Burns appears to be very successful as a leader. Unit performance indices can be used to examine what impact leaders have on the â€Å"bottom lines† of their organizations. Since she has taken over as CEO, Xerox shares have gone up 50% and the S P is higher by nearly 100% (Brown, 2014). Based on this information and her average salary the board must be happy with how she is performing. However, another way to measure success is by subordinates ratings of effectiveness. Subordinates may be relatively satisfied or dissatisfied, may be motivated or unmotivated, may feel relatively committed or uncommitted to the organization, or may believe their leader is relatively effective or ineffective. Because Burns has found herself on the worst CEO’s list of 2014 it can be said that she has been unsuccessful as a leader (Hughes, Ginnett, Curphy, 2009). Conclusion Overall it is important to remember that there are many dynamics to measuring leadership and management. Leadership and management can have many different meanings. Burns is a prime example of this. I believe she is an effective manager, because businesses are in the business of making money and her shareholders are happy. She also sits on the board of several inspirational companies like FIRST and Change the Equation, which could have many people looking at her leadership abilities. However, when it comes to Xerox her primary focus is making the shareholders happy, when could indicate she is not being a true leader in a way that motivates, inspires, encourages, or simply speaks to their employees. The Truman Show Essay -- essays research papers

The Truman Show is a film which has been developed through a range of images. Peter Weir has creatively directed a film portraying the media and its impact on society. Within this film we see the effectiveness of techniques, which include camera angles, framing, shot types, camera movement, style of music, costuming and sequencing. By using a range of different techniques Weir is able to create emotive images and portray three different worlds to the audience. Image is everything in today’s society appearance of things have become more important that what they really are and these images are being constantly fed to us through the media. Image has both a positive and negative influence on the individual but most people have been drawn into the stereotypical world. Truman Burbank is the star of a television show who lives a perfect life - stable job, wife and friends to support him but he is unbeknown to the world which revolves around him 24 hours a day. Truman is portrayed as a uncomplicated, affable and contented insurance salesman. His conservative costuming reflects this as he is clean shaven and dressed in light neat fitting clothing. Distortion of truth and constructed images are key themes portrayed in the movie this is characterised by the drowning of Truman’s father which was staged purely to implant a fear in Truman’s mind of going on or over the water. This is the way that Christof could control Truman from finding the truth and leaving the island by boat or bridg...

Motivating a clerical assistant

It has been found out that morale and high productivity or output always go together. They have a positive correlation. If the worker likes his work, his fellow worker , and the company, his high productivity will bring him increased acceptance and prestige among the workers and management, as well as increase in pay and advancement in position. He finds these things rewarding and is stimulated to work conscientiously. As a wise and effective supervisor to the clerical assistant, I should aim at both high morale and high productivity to be developed and sustained during these times and in the coming hectic season. Some specific things I can do: 1. Provide good physical conditions for work. I cannot literally give to the assistant because I do not own the company nor even position myself as the manager. But I will try to influence my big boss/es that those things that can help improve his/her work be provided like small amenities as supply of office materials needed to speed up his/her work to a ventilated workplace. 2. Reduce work frustration on the job to a minimum by means of a good environment and/or working relationship. 3. Treat him/her as one that has a personality that can be hurt. Hence, with the assistant around, I will influence others in treating the assistant as somebody who is needed and must be encouraged by thoughtful words and tact. 4. Have a good communication system. This is related with item #3. It is my job to facilitate smooth flow of interrelationships in the department. I believe I can do this by proper feedback of things that add credit to the assistant and back to others especially the director. The person with high morale has confidence in himself, thinks his work is worth doing and that he is doing a good job (Landy, 1985). Perhaps, one good exchange I can probably offer him/her is flexible working hours. I can suggest this to the management especially when the assistant has other pressing responsibilities at home. Another is schedule trips that can be given away as incentives after the hectic season (Baron, 1983). Reference: 1. Baron, R.
